## Our voice in one sentence 🔵

We sound like a warm, honest friend who is part of a lively church family. We name real life first, then invite people toward Jesus and toward each other.

The printed guide's own samples capture it: **"Real Life. Real People."** and **"We want to be the Church every day of the week."** 🟢 (capitalized per the style guide: Church = Body of Christ)

## Voice principles 🔵

| We are | We are not |
|---|---|
| **Warm**: we talk *with* people | Stiff, institutional, or corporate |
| **Inviting**: "Join us," "Come as you are" | Commanding, guilt-driven, or salesy |
| **Authentic**: honest about struggle and imperfection | Polished, perfect, or performative |
| **Encouraging and hopeful**: grace has the last word | Shame-based or fear-based |
| **Accessible**: anyone can follow along | Full of insider jargon or church-speak |
| **Substantive**: specific about what's offered | Vague spiritual clichés |

## The five traits as voice

🟢 The brand traits exist "to shape the voice and tone of all our church's communications, particularly in regards to messaging and visual design."

🔵 Lead each piece with **one** trait. Pick the one that fits the message, not all five.

| Trait | Tagline 🟢 | Sounds like 🔵 | Use for 🔵 |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Generous** | We have so much to be grateful for. | Gratitude, giving framed as joy and privilege | Giving, serving, missions, outreach |
| **Vibrant** | Life is full, and so are our hearts. | Energy, celebration, momentum | Big events, worship nights, seasonal launches |
| **Relational** | Connected hearts, shared journeys. | Togetherness, being known, "we" and "you" | Groups, Life Bible Study, newcomer next steps |
| **Attentive** | Every person, every day. | Practical, low-barrier, present beyond Sunday | Care ministries, support groups, classes |
| **Genuine** | Real stories, real grace. | Honest tension, redemption, testimony | Stories, recovery, baptism, invitations to the skeptical |

## How we write 🔵

### 1. Lead with human reality, then the answer

> ✅ "Parenting is hard. Sometimes you need people who get it."
> ❌ "Join our parenting community."

### 2. Speak to emotion before institution

> ✅ "If you've ever felt like you don't belong, you do here."
> ❌ "Our ministry offers fellowship opportunities for all."

### 3. Show, don't tell

> ✅ "Come as you are. No judgment. Just people showing up for each other."
> ❌ "We are an inclusive, welcoming community."

### 4. Use "we" and "you"

Write as one person talking to another, not as an organization making an announcement.

> ✅ "We'd love to save you a seat."
> ❌ "Attendees are encouraged to arrive early."

### 5. Invite; don't pressure

> ✅ "Join us Wednesdays, Oct 5–26 @ 6:30p."
> ❌ "You need to be there. Don't miss out!"

### 6. Name Jesus naturally

Faith is the point, not a garnish. Mention Jesus plainly and warmly, without stacking religious phrases.

### 7. Explain what insiders already know

Spell out the full ministry name on first reference ("Life Bible Study," not "LBS"). Say what a thing *is* before its name assumes they know it. Never assume the reader already attends.

### 8. One clear call to action, pointing to one place 🟢

"Fewer options lead to more action." Every piece gets **one** next step, and it points to **HoustonsFirst.org**. On Sundays, that one place is **Quick Links**. Never send people to Linktree, a third-party site, or a link aggregator as the primary destination. (Houston's First *Digital Destination Guidelines*, effective July 1, 2026.)

> ✅ "Register at HoustonsFirst.org/gathering."
> ✅ "Find it on Quick Links." (Sunday)
> ❌ "Check the link in our bio for all the links!"

### 9. Trust simple invitations

Don't over-explain. One clear ask beats three hedged ones.

## Voice by channel 🟢

From the Promotion Playbook (July 2026). Same voice everywhere; the job changes by channel.

| Channel | Its job | How it sounds |
|---|---|---|
| **Sunday stage + WSA slide** | Inspire | "Inspiration, not information. Information is available at the link." One next step only: **Quick Links**. One or two announcements at most. |
| **Message Notes** | Point to action | Short. "If it's on Message Notes, it's on Quick Links." |
| **Pre-service slides / signage** | Catch the eye | A headline, a date, a destination. A slide holds attention for about 8 seconds. |
| **Email** | Personal next step | **To and from a named person**, never unaddressed or unsigned. ("Hi, Charlie! Here's the important message, and here's what I need you to do. See you Sunday, Amanda.") Clear subject line, concise CTA. |
| **Text message** | Nudge | Short and action-oriented. Best for changes and last-minute reminders. |
| **Churchwide social** | Shape culture | Storytelling, culture shaping, invitational moments. |
| **Ministry social** | Build community | Recurring engagement and audience-specific posts. Reminders go in **Stories**, not feed posts. |
| **Website** | Be the source of truth | Complete and accurate: registration, contact, current graphics. |

## Spanish-language copy 🟢

Per Houston's First's staff AI use policy: AI may help with translation, but translated content must be reviewed for accuracy, cultural appropriateness, and consistency with the Houston's First voice. **Public-facing Spanish communications must be reviewed by a Spanish Ministry team member familiar with the Houston's First Spanish Brand Guidelines** before distribution.

> The Spanish Brand Guidelines are being created (expected mid-October 2026). Until then, route Spanish copy to the Spanish Ministry team for review.

## Tone by audience 🔵

| Audience | Tone shift | Emphasize | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Disconnected Families** (external) | Most welcoming; least assumed knowledge | Relatable tension, practical value, low barrier to entry | Church-speak, guilt, "you should" |
| **Young Families** (internal) | Encouraging, practical, efficient | Time, resources, whole-family growth, simple next steps | Long copy; asking for one more commitment without a "why" |
| **Established Families** (internal) | Respectful, visionary, purposeful | Legacy, investing in the next generation, peer community | Talking down; generic "get involved" asks |

## Tone by moment 🟡

| Moment | Typical tier | Tone |
|---|---|---|
| Celebration (Easter, Christmas, Day of Baptism) | Key | Vibrant, joyful, expansive |
| Campus-wide invitation (VBS, community events) | Tier A | Warm, energetic, local |
| Ministry invitation (events, groups) | Tier B / C | Warm, specific, low-pressure |
| Giving and generosity | Key | Grateful, never guilt-based; tell what giving makes possible |
| Care and crisis (grief, illness, tragedy) | n/a | Gentle, steady, brief. Lead with presence, not programs |
| Logistics (deadlines, schedule changes, reminders) | Tier D | Clear and friendly; facts first, warmth in one line, single touch |

Tiers come from the Communications Promotion Playbook (staff document): Key = churchwide, Tier A = entire campus, B = strategic ministry, C = ongoing ministry, D = informational.

## Approved messaging blocks 🟢

Use these verbatim or adapt them to length. They can go in about pages, campaigns, and stage scripts.

### Generous: *We have so much to be grateful for.*

Gratitude can be hard to come by. At Houston's First, generosity is not only about what we give financially — it's about what we give of our whole lives. We are a community profoundly grateful for the abundant blessings we've received, and our joy is found in giving back. Join us as we extend a helping hand and share our resources and lives to make an impact on those around us. Together, we're giving ourselves away so that our community can know the love we've experienced through Jesus.

### Vibrant: *Life is full, and so are our hearts.*

Life is full. And sometimes it is hard to fill with the things that matter most. Step into the lively heartbeat of Houston's First, where each day is a celebration of life in Jesus. Our church is a vibrant mixture of activities, growth, and opportunities to draw you closer to God. From dynamic worship experiences to engaging community events, there's a rhythm of joy and vitality that resonates through our church community. Join us as we embrace the fullness of life and explore the possibilities of spiritual growth together.

### Relational: *Connected hearts, shared journeys.*

It can be hard to stay connected. People are busier and lonelier than ever. But relationships are the heartbeat of our community. We intentionally nurture close connections within our expansive church family, ensuring everyone feels known, valued, and loved. Beyond the walls of the church, we journey together, supporting one another in whatever life brings. At our four campuses, we welcome everyone and the diversity that God has created in our church.

> Confirmed 2026-10-02: Houston's First has **four campuses**: The Loop, Cypress, Downtown, and Sienna. Houston's First en Español is a **ministry of The Loop Campus**, not a separate campus.

### Attentive: *Every person, every day.*

We never know when life's struggles will come. At Houston's First, we're not just a Sunday church. We're the Church every day of the week. We pay attention to the needs and joys of those around us, striving to be a source of support and care. Whether in moments of triumph or challenge, our commitment to being attentive is reflected in our ministries every day. We are intent on making an impact one person at a time because Jesus has changed everything for us.

### Genuine: *Real stories, real grace.*

It can be hard to find "real" these days. We feel pressure to maintain appearances. Authenticity is at the core of who we are at Houston's First. As Jesus followers, we openly acknowledge our imperfections and the transformative power of God's grace in our lives. We invite you to join a community that embraces honesty, shares honest stories of redemption, and extends the same forgiveness we've received from Jesus. In Him we find strength, connection, and a shared journey. We are genuinely loved and forever changed.
